Description In memory of Fatima Mobeen (Allahu Yarhamha). Her faithful commitment to her Deen, her family, her community and the organizations she served was unsurpassed. In the face of adversities, she was a pillar of hope. This award, a glimmer of hope, recognizes a mature student who has demonstrated significant effort and extraordinary determination to overcome a personal challenge; moreover, used it as an opportunity to grow by pursuing their learning goals.

Open to Mature undergraduate or post-graduate students who are "21 years of age or older by the first day of classes of the term in which admission is sought" (University of Alberta definition) and who has demonstrated significant effort and extraordinary determination to overcome a personal challenge and used it as an opportunity to grow by pursuing their learning goals.
Eligibility Criteria Residence Requirements:
Be an Edmonton or surrounding area resident (the applicant or the applicant’s parent(s) must have resided in Edmonton or surrounding area during the previous 24 months);
Be a Permanent Resident of Canada or a Canadian Citizen.

Grade Requirements:
Have attained an overall average of 3.5 out of 4.0 or higher (throughout all years of their studies). Averages are not rounded up for scholarship purposes.

Level of Studies:
Be enrolled full-time in a post-secondary program (full-time is defined as 80% course load or higher).

Additional Requirements:
Demonstrate community service & volunteer work.
Application Requirements Form Requirements:
Upload at least two signed, current (less than one year old) reference letters (references from friends are discouraged and references from family members will not be accepted).
Upload a PDF transcript for all courses taken during the current degree you are working towards. All transcripts must show the name of the student and their birthdate. Screenshots of transcripts will not be accepted.
Upload proof of enrolment for post-secondary studies, if available, at the time of your application
Selection Criteria Strong applications will emphasize the student’s:
maturity and a commitment to their studies;
motivation to be engaged meaningfully in their community and the world at large.
Notification Process Students will be notified by email of the status of their application in early November. Once awarded, scholarships will be sent directly to students. Students must notify the Office of AREF of any changes to their application.
